Pleasant Hill, CA (PRWEB) July 24, 2014

Professional Healthcare at Home, an affiliate of Kindred at Home, is pleased to announce that Karen Schulkin, a nurse with the companys Pleasant Hill, CA, home health care agency, has been named a Top 10 Finalist for the 2014 Home Care & Hospice Nurse of the Year Award presented by the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC).

Annually, NAHC promotes a nationwide recognition campaign that asks its members, affiliates and the public to help choose a top home care and hospice nurse from every state. NAHC recognizes nurses for providing exceptional care, reducing hospital readmissions and making a difference in patients lives. A public vote determines the winning nurse from the top 10 finalists featured on their website. Online voting runs through September 30, 2014. Visit http://www.nahc.org/consumer-information/2014-nurse-of-the-year-nominees/ to review the finalists and cast a vote. The winner will be announced at the NAHC Annual Meeting & Exposition in October.

Professional Healthcare at Home, an affiliate of Kindred at Home, nominated Schulkin for Nurse of the Year before she was selected by a committee of experts to represent California. Schulkins entry has now placed her as one of the top 10 finalists for this title. A story about Schulkin and her patient, Brian Hanson, is featured on the NAHC web sites voting page and will be published in the next CARING magazine for nurses.

Schulkin was able to utilize her exceptional wound care skills in Brians treatment. Beyond the wound care and pain management she provided, Schulkin was able to help Brian change other aspects of his lifestyle, such as quitting smoking and improving his diet. Schulkin also provided care at a deeper level, taking interest in Brians stories about his troubled past and concern with his current circumstances. She helped him adopt Mandy, a rescue dog who has become his constant companion.

Karen Schulkin not only provided health care to Brian, but a personal companionship that changed his life. Schulkin is a shining example of quality, compassionate care, and Professional Healthcare at Home is proud to have her represent California as one of the most caring nurses in the nation.
